One of my favorite Dorothy pics. Did you know that she and Nat “King” Cole pitched ideas to networks about doing a television sitcom together? They had a few angles, including one where they played a “small-time pair of married performers” who went through all kinds of (’50s sitcom-ish) scenarios as they climbed the ladder to success. They were turned down all over town. Quelle surprise!

Seems like IKEA are really shaking things up this year. In addition to the previously announced TV set, they’re also going to release a digital camera made of cardboard called Knäppa (“Snap”). It’ll hold 40 photographs at a time and plugs directly into your USB port. While it’s not the prettiest camera the world has ever seen, I do love the idea of a screen-less digital camera that brings people back to the wait-and-see days of film.

Day 02 - A picture of yourself

GPOY, bum edition. ha, my hair looks like it’s part of my shirt, and I’ve got one eye due to the glare from my hipster glasses. Plus it looks like I have one giant tooth.

This was me, standing in the lunch line in first grade back in 2000.  It was pirate day.

LIFE photographer Gjon Mili (who also directed the classic 10-minute short film, “Jammin’ the Blues”) often hosted jam sessions at his photography studio in New York during the 1940s.

Above: Billie Holiday sings her standard, “Fine and Mellow,” accompanied by James P. Johnson on piano and others during a 1942 jam session in Gjon Mili’s studio. “Fine and Mellow” was the B-side of Holiday’s classic 1939 Commodore Records single, “Strange Fruit,” a composition and recording that Time magazine called “the song of the century.”
